Background information of Uasin Gishu county
Uasin Gishu County is located in the North Rift region of Kenya and has its headquarters in Eldoret town. It extends between longitudes 340 50’ east and 350 37’ west and latitudes 00 03’ South and 00 55’ North. The County shares common borders with Trans Nzoia County to the North, Elgeyo Marakwet County to the East, Baringo County to the South East, Kericho County to the South, Nandi County to the South West and Kakamega County to the North West. It covers a total area of 3,345.2 Km2. The county had a population of 1.163,186 as per KNBS census 2019. By 2025 the total county projected population will be 1,306,864 and this will further rise to 1,355,385 by year 2027.
The County experiences a high and reliable rainfall with an average annual rainfall ranging between 624.9mm and 1560.4mm. It occurs between the months of March and September with two distinct peaks in May and August. Average temperatures range between 70 C and 290 C.

The main economic activities in the county include agriculture and agro-processing. Owing to its agricultural prowess in production of wheat, maize and milk on large scale, the County is referred to as ‘the bread basket’. The county government is also promoting crop diversification in crops like bananas, coffee, avocado, macadamia, and irish potatoes to boost food security,

According to the kenya demographic and health survey, 14 % children under the age of five are stunted, 4 % of children under five are wasted, 6% of children under five are underweight and 2 % of children under five are overweight. Other figures presented in the same document indicate that Uasin Gishu had a neonatal mortality rate of 17 deaths per 1000 live births, in infant mortality rate of 31 deaths per 1000 live births and an under five mortality rates of 37 deaths per 1000 live births.
Vitamin A supplementation for the first semester of 2024 was 91%. for children 6-11 months, proportion of children 12-59 months dewormed was at 94% in the same semester. The proportion of infants less than 6 months old on exclusive breastfeeding was at 86.2% in 2023 and the proportion on newborn initiated on breastmilk within the first one hour after delivery was at 63% in the same year -DHIS
